Lee and Pike

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee stated that he expects death row inmate Christa Pike’s sentence to remain unchanged unless determined otherwise by the courts, following her failed execution attempt last month.

Pike, who was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer, survived two doses of lethal injection drugs and was hospitalized before returning to prison, where she is now able to walk and speak in full sentences.

In response to the botched execution—the second troubled execution in the state this year—Lee has paused all executions through the end of the year while officials investigate what went wrong.

The fallout from the incident has also led to administrative changes within the state's prison system, with Tennessee Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada resigning from his position. Strada will step down by the end of the month, and Gov. Lee expects to announce a replacement in the coming days.

Meanwhile, defense attorneys and lawmakers are weighing potential legal avenues and the future of execution protocols in the state, while a judge has ordered the preservation of evidence related to the failed procedure.
