An upcoming event in Tellico Village is inviting people to dance the night away.
It’s the “Monster Mash Ballroom Bash,” and it’s scheduled at 6 p.m.Thursday, Oct. 29, at the Tellico Village Yacht Club.
The event is organized by veteran-dance instructor Marie Connolly, Timeless Ballroom of Knoxville and Citizens Insurance Solutions. Connolly said the night is focused on seniors.
“My slogan is dancing Marie, moving through medicare,” Connolly said. “I’m using dancing to keep seniors moving. It’s good for balance, agility and brain function because they have to memorize patterns, and then, they have to get their bodies to do what they want so that is control and coordination.”
Connolly said she began dancing in the 70s during the disco era. She said she has been involved with 2 start-up studios in Knoxville; Dance Dimensions and Absolute Ballroom. Connolly said she gets much satisfaction from teaching others to ballroom dance.
“I really enjoy seeing my students excel on the dance floor. I had a couple I started teaching back in 2007 who went from polka and graduated in other dances,” Connolly said. “The man said he wanted to lose weight and be able to get into a tailsuit and to dance the Viennese Waltz and go to Vienna. He and his wife later went to Vienna.”
Connolly said Monster Mash Ballroom Bash begins with a beginner ballroom class and will include open dancing. She said there will also be a professional and amateur showcase. And, Connolly said there is a costume contest.
The cost is $20 a person. For those wanting to attend, they can call Marie Connolly at (865) 973-6964 to register.
