In such a short period of time, the Kiwanis Club of Loudon County has begun to create a huge, lasting impact for the children and families of Loudon County.

The charter was formed on December 8, 2023 by Carol Wisdom, membership coordinator for Kiwanis International. Wisdom’s intention was to grow the impact of Kiwanis and add to the good works the Tellico Village chapter, which has proven favorable thus far.

The club’s mission is simple but impactful: to serve children and improve their communities.

A Year of Service and Community Involvement

The club has already made great strides in supporting local schools and children through various initiatives. They have conducted food drives for the Family Resource Center and Baptist Association, supplied water bottles for elementary schools, organized Thanksgiving food donations, library book donations to elementary schools, a monetary donation to Greenback’s HOSA program and so much more.

The official Charter Celebration was held on February 15, 2024, marking the formal establishment of the club. Since then, under the leadership of President Tammy Gallaher, Treasurer Marcie Nichols, Vice President Gina Troutman and Secretary Cindy Bengel, the club has expanded its efforts. Directors Trish Kopinski, Bonita Fowler and Laura Goodman also contribute significantly to the organization’s mission, along with their 20 members.

One of the club’s major accomplishments is its outreach to all seven elementary schools in the area. The club has donated hygiene products, water bottles, and books, ensuring that every school receives some form of aid. In March, the club plans to deliver $100 checks to each school library to help with book purchases, further reinforcing its commitment to education.

The club has also successfully hosted community service projects such as:

  • A coat drive at North Middle School, where the class with the most donations won a pizza party.
  • A food drive at Food City, where community members purchased and donated 100 bags of food, which were then distributed to local schools.
  • Participation in the Fireside Festival, a free family event featuring Santa Claus and children’s activities.

Schools in need can also reach out for specific assistance, making Kiwanis a crucial resource for the community. Gallaher told the News-Herald that all of their donations are divided evenly between area schools.

As a growing organization, Kiwanis is actively recruiting new members and corporate sponsors. With 20 members, the club seeks individuals and businesses interested in giving back to the community. Membership requires a $150 annual fee, and volunteers working directly with children must undergo background checks. Corporate memberships are also available, allowing businesses to designate representatives to participate in club meetings and activities.

One of the club’s biggest challenges is balancing service projects with the members’ full-time work commitments.

“A lot of our group is working individuals. We’re limited on time, but we do what we can,” Gallaher said. “Every little bit helps.”

For those interested in joining or supporting the club, meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month at 5:00 p.m. at Roane State Community College. More information and updates on initiatives can be found on their Facebook page. Every little bit of help makes a difference in strengthening the future of Loudon County’s children.
