Tellico Village was the location for the 66th annual Knox Area Women’s Golf Association Tournament that took place June 9-11 at Toqua Golf Course.
Forty-five women from the member clubs participated in the three-day tournament.
The match play tournament consisted of six flights of golfers based on players’ handicap indices. Four of the flights, including the championship flight, were played from the green tees, and for the first time, two flights were played from the yellow, or forward, tees. The weather was perfect — if a little warm — and the course was in excellent condition, as was commented on by many of the participants.
There were many close matches over the three-day tournament with a number of them going extra holes.
On the final day, the championship match was between Kensington Wieland of Tellico Village and Sharon Kelly, a two-time champion herself. In a tight match, Kensington was able to hold off Sharon to win the championship. Kensington was comfortable on her home course but admitted that Sharon gave her all she could handle. Sharon said one of the main factors in Kensington’s win was her accuracy, particularly on approach shots to the greens.
Kensington, the daughter of Tellico Village residents Cindy and Ken Wieland, recently completed her sophomore year at the University of Cincinnati where she was attending on a golf scholarship. She will be transferring to Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn., in August to have the opportunity to play a little more and be where she “can really grow and develop on and off the course.”
Following completion of play on Thursday, an award luncheon was held and prizes for the winners were awarded. The prizes, which were made by the Tellico Village Woodworkers Club with the help of the Photography Club, all depicted seasonal scenes of various holes of the three Tellico Village courses.
Other winners from Tellico Village included: Bonnie Wood, championship flight runner-up; Vicki Whitmore, first flight winner; Sherry Wille, first flight consolation winner; Brenda McJunkin, second flight runner-up; Laura Imboden, third flight winner; Nancy Hammar, third flight runner-up; Evelyn Brooks, fourth flight winner; Diane Carter, fourth flight runner-up; Sarah Havens, fourth flight third place; Phyllis Parrot-Price, fifth flight runner-up; and Sara Emery, fifth flight consolation winner.
Prior to the start of the competition, a couples event for tournament participants and partners was held June 7 at Toqua Golf Course followed by dinner and prizes. The four-person teams played a two-best ball format, one from men, one from women.
The winning teams included: green flight, Dena and Steve Bower of Oak Ridge and Francie Elrod and John Garrison of Green Meadow, first; Vicki and Chip Whitmore of Tellico Village and Sherry and Dick Wille of Tellico Village, second; mixed flight, Nancy and Gene Hammar of Tellico Village and Pam and Joe Skinner of Tellico Village, first; Linda Romero and Bob Messa and Laura and Chuck Imboden, second.
Both the couples dinner and award luncheon were catered by Chef by Request.
Pam Skinner is the tournament chairwoman.
