2017 starts strong for Lions Club

Wayne DeLawter, from left, and Sam Carpenter are welcomed into the Tellico Village Lions Club by members Ron Lockhart and Doris Catani.

The Tellico Village Lions Club got the year off to a great start at its first meeting by inducting two new members.

The club hopes this is a predictor of how the rest of the year will go.

New members are Wayne DeLawter and Sam Carpenter, both retired U.S. Air Force generals and longtime residents of the Village. Their memberships were sponsored by Lion Ron Lockhart.

The ceremony was conducted by Doris Catani, the club’s membership chairwoman, and presided over by Margaret VanWormer, club president.

In addition to the induction ceremony, actions were set in motion for the club’s chili-soup dinner, the first fundraising event of the year, which will be held 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, in the Christian Life Center of the Community Church at Tellico Village. Tickets are $11 per person in advance or $13 per person at the door and can be purchased from any Lion or at Sloan’s, United Community Bank or The Village Salon in Tellico Village. If you don’t know a Lion, call Marcia Higby at 865-458-9356 or Larry Stickler at 865-458-6582.

Plans were also finalized for the club’s annual appreciation dinner, which recognized and honored non-member supporters of the various activities the club conducts. Many of the club’s fundraisers would not be possible without the assistance of member spouses, friends and neighbors.

Also discussed was the upcoming health fair 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Jan. 24 at the Good Samaritan Center in Lenoir City, which will include blood pressure checks, glucose checks and vision testing. Those determined to need glasses, and who qualify based on poverty guidelines, will receive them free of charge from the Lions Club.

Prospective members are welcome at one of two monthly meetings — 9:15 a.m. on the first Tuesday of the month or at 6 p.m. the third Tuesday of the month — at First Baptist Church of Tellico Village. Those attending the dinner meeting will be treated to a free meal. The dinner meeting normally features a guest speaker.
