The Elf Project helps local families at Christmas

Elf Project Director Sandra McEntire and volunteer Marla Tedesco organize volunteers for this year’s Christmas shopping trips with local families.

Sandra McEntire, Tellico Village resident and director of The Elf Project for a Child’s Christmas, is already organizing volunteers who will help parents struggling to provide Christmas for children ages 12 and under.

The Elf Project matches applicant parents with a volunteer shopper, who meets the parent and pays up to $50 for presents for each child approved.

“With donated funds, Elf Project volunteers provide the money and the parents get to enjoy choosing the presents — clothes, toys, maybe a basketball or a doll,” McEntire said. “On Christmas morning, kids open gifts chosen by their parents, providing an experience where children and family are the center of Christmas.”

The Elf Project needs volunteers for this year’s Christmas shopping trips.

Founded in 2003, The Elf Project has grown steadily, often by word of mouth. The 501©(3) organization assists families in Loudon, Monroe and Knox counties. Each year, nearly 300 children enjoy a family Christmas thanks to the efforts of Elf volunteers and donors.

To qualify for assistance, families must have a recommendation from a legitimate service provider, such as Head Start, Helen Ross McNabb Center, CASA or Good Shepherd Center.

“Sometimes, a family is experiencing a setback, such as job loss or illness, and needs help until they get back on their feet,” McEntire said. “Some applicants may not qualify for other forms of assistance, such as grandparents who have custody of their grandchildren. Our goal is to identify families in real need and help them provide a family Christmas experience.”
