Sam Maner, a genealogist who helped President George H.W. Bush trace his roots back to Blount County, will offer a four-class workshop for beginners starting later this month at The Public Library at Tellico Village.

The workshop, “Digging Deep: Your Family History,” will be designed to get participants started tracing their ancestry using the Internet. By the end of the workshop, attendees will be able to follow historical lines and interpret various records and understand how to use genealogy-related tools. Workshop sessions will be held 10 a.m.-noon April 28, May 5, May 19 and May 26 at the library, 300 Irene Lane in Tellico Village. A makeup session can be scheduled if a participant misses a class.

Cost is $100, and a portion will be donated by Maner to the library. The workshop is limited to 10 participants.

Maner has more than 25 years of experience in genealogy, including working for ancestry.com, serving as historian for Sevier County and registrar for Sons of the Revolution and teaching at Pellissippi State Community College. In addition to his work with Bush, Maner has worked with U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., and U.S. Congressman Rep. John Duncan, R-Tenn., in discovering their ancestral heritage.
