Tellico Village was the location for the 66th annual Knox Area Women’s Golf Association Tournament held earlier this summer at Toqua Golf Course, with 45 women from area clubs competing in the event.
The match play tournament consisted of six flights based on player indices. Four of the flights, including the championship flight, were played from the green tees, and, for the first time this year, two flights were played from the yellow forward tees.
The tourney included numerous close matchups. On the final day of competition, the championship match was between Kensington Wieland of Tellico Village and Sharon Kelly, a two-time past champion. In a close match, Wieland was able to hold off Kelly to win the title.
Wieland said she felt comfortable on her home course, but admitted that Kelly offered a competitive matchup.
Kelly said one of the factors for Wieland’s win was her accuracy, particularly on approach shots.
Wieland, the daughter of Cindy and Ken Wieland, recently completed her sophomore year at the University of Cincinnati, where she attends on a golf scholarship. She plans to transfer to Lee University for the fall semester.
An awards luncheon was held after the tournament, and prizes were awarded the winners. The prizes, which were made by members of the Tellico Village Woodworkers Club with assistance from the Photography Club, depicted seasonal scenes of various holes on Tellico Village courses.
Other winners from the tourney include: Bonnie Wood, championship flight runner-up; Vicki Whitmore, first flight winner; Sherry Wille, first flight consolation; Brenda McJunkin, second flight runner-up; Laura Imboden, third flight winner; Nancy Hammer, third flight runner-up; Evelyn Brooks, fourth flight winner; Diane Carter, fourth flight runner-up; Sarah Havens, fourth flight third place; Phyllis Parrott-Price, fifth flight runner-up; and Sara Emery, fifth fight consolation.
Winners in the couples tournament included Dena and Steve Bower and Francie Elrod and John Garrison, green flight; Nancy and Gene Hammer and Pam and Joe Skinner, mixed flight.
