Following is a list of upcoming recreational activities that are available through the summer in Tellico Village.

Orientations on the proper use of the cardiovascular and weight equipment will be provided at 2 p.m. Aug. 4 and 22 at the Wellness Center, 200 Dohi Drive in Tellico Village.

It is recommended that you get approval from your doctor before beginning an exercise program. The orientations are free, but reservations are required. Please call the Wellness Center at 865-458-7070 to have your name added to the date you desire. If the dates above do not work for you or you would like an orientation at the Kahite facility, please leave your name with the front desk and the instructor will contact you.

For upcoming hike information, please check the hiking website at http://www.tvhikers.com. Please remember that all hikers need to meet 8 a.m. at the Tellico Village Visitors Center. Hiking boots and hiking sticks are recommended. Bring water and a trail lunch. Driving directions will be provided the morning of the hikes. Carpooling is recommended and will be set up the morning of the hikes. Passengers are asked to contribute to help cover the cost of gas and other supplies.

An introduction to line dancing with Toni Grovier will be held at 1 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Wellness Center, and the group will meet at 1 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday. There is an additional fee of $3 that must be paid to the instructor to attend line dancing. To have your name added to the list, call the Wellness Center at 865-458-7070.

Are you interested in feeling more comfortable in the water? If you are interested in either adult or child swimming lessons, competitive swim classes or water personal training sessions, then please contact Kim Wiebe, a Red Cross certified swim instructor. She is ready to teach any level of swimming and will customize the lessons to meet your goals.

Competitive swimming can help prepare you for a swim team, and water personal training sessions provide a low-impact, customized workout with no swimming required. Cost for four, 30-minute private lessons is $120 or $90 for four, 30-minute semi-private lessons. Cost for water personal training is $45 per hour. The lap lane in the big pool will be closed 1-5 p.m. Monday, 1-6 p.m. Tuesday and 3-6 p.m. Thursday for swimming lessons. The other five lanes will be open for open and lap swimming.

Are you interested in learning the ins and outs of the recreation department? Would you like to learn who the correct contact person is for room reservations or the addition of new classes? If so, please attend the next Rec 101 session, which is set for 12:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Wellness Center. Reservations are not required.

Join Andrew Bennett, with Insurance That Fits, at noon Aug. 5 at Chota Recreation Center to find out how the Medicare system works and what is changing due to the Affordable Care Act. Bennett will explain and answer questions that you may have over a free lunch. Call Chota at 865-458-6779 to sign up.

Join Dr. Jan Dungan, with Appalachian Audiology, at 10 a.m. Aug. 13 at Chota when she presents a seminar on consumer protection for hearing aid purchases. Dungan will discuss how to avoid paying too much for hearing aids and unnecessary features. She will help you on what questions you need to ask and what is the best hearing aid for you and will provide information on the newest technology in hearing health care, including waterproof hearing aids, wireless connections to television and cellphones, hands-free phone use and new programming features that help the individual hear speech clearly in noisy places like restaurants.

After the seminar, Dungan will conduct comprehensive hearing checks that will look at the outer, middle and inner ear. The checks will only take about 15 minutes. The seminar and the hearing checks are free, but registration is required by calling Chota at 865-458-6779.

An AARP safe driving course will be held 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 17-18 at Chota. Participants must attend both class days. The fee is $15 per person for members and $20 per person for nonmembers. Payment is expected the day of the class, and members are asked to bring their AARP membership card if applicable. After completion of the class, you may receive a discount on your auto insurance premium. Class size will be limited, so sign up today by calling 865-458-6779. If the class is full, a waiting list will be maintained for future classes.

Join Dr. Antoin Mardini with the Summit Medical Group at 1 p.m. Aug. 19 at Chota as he discusses geriatric issues like memory loss, fatigue and frequent falls. The seminar is free but registration is required by calling 865-458-6779.

Join Dr. Jessica Briere, with Complete Chiropractic & Wellness Center, when she presents a seminar on preventative techniques at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 20 at Chota. Learn what you should eat and not eat and simple stretches you can do at home to live well with arthritis. To sign up for this free seminar, please call 865-458-6779.
