Softball league seeks players

The Tellico Men’s Senior Softball League is scheduled to begin fall play Sept. 1 at the Loudon Municipal Park, and the league will continue for 10 weeks.

The slow-pitch, seven-inning league consists of five teams, and the league is looking for new players to fill anticipated vacancies. The league is in its 13th year of play.

The league is open to men who are 55 and older by Dec. 31. All new players will be assigned to a team and are guaranteed to play. Cost is $35 and includes field rental, volunteer umpires and a year-end pizza party. All players must sign a team waiver form from Loudon County.

Games are played at 1 p.m. Tuesdays, with team warmups and batting practice beginning about noon. In addition to the Tuesday games, optional batting practices take place at 10 a.m. Thursdays.

All new players are required to attend at least one new player practice session set for Aug. 13, 18, 20 or 25. New players need a glove and are recommended to have softball shoes with rubber cleats.

A meeting for current and new players will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 11 at Chota Recreation Center in Tellico Village.

American Legion revisits World War II

American Legion Post 256 member Donald Edmands, who is a military historian, recently gave a presentation to Legionnaires about his own research on World War II.

As Edmands told members of the American Legion, the 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich was an elite Nazi division during the war, having served during the invasion of France and took part in several major battles on the eastern front. The division was then transferred to the western front and took part in the fighting at Normandy and in the Battle of the Bulge, ending the war with fighting in Hungary and Austria.

Pets available for adoption

Kristi and Lena are the featured pets of the week up for adoption at Monroe County Animal Shelter.

Kristi is a small, 6-pound, all-white, short-haired cat with golden eyes that has been in foster care since arriving at the center with her litter. She is now an indoor cat. She seems a little shy and enjoys being brushed. She is also getting used to being picked up by people.

According to shelter officials, Kristi acts normal around other cats and dogs but will run from children, and she will likely be best suited in a quiet household. She had a skin reaction to the application of flea preventive, and a vet will need to determine which preventative to use in the future, according to center officials.

Lena is a friendly silver and gray tabby mix.

Also available at the center are cats named Catness, a dark tortoiseshell; Gaylord, a gray and white tabby with a stub tail; Megan, a white cat with some black parts; Oliver, a white and orange cat; and Roberta, a dark tortoiseshell. The shelter also has numerous young kittens that will become available when weaned.

All pets adopted from the shelter are spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped and have a new collar and name tag.

Shelter needs this week are for paper towels and laundry detergent, along with an ongoing need for newspapers, bleach, office supplies, brooms, mops and blankets.

Visit the shelter 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays at 170 Kefauver Lane in Madisonville behind Walmart. The shelter is closed to the public on Sunday and Monday. For more information, call 423-442-1015.
