Dante, a 7-year-old Newfoundland and Labrador mix, is the featured pet of the week up for adoption at Monroe County Animal Shelter.

He was also the pet of the week earlier this year. According to shelter officials, the dog has since tested positive for diabetes and is currently in foster care. Dante is being treated for the disease, but because of a prolonged elevated blood pressure, he has lost his eyesight.

His foster mother has been working with him, and he is learning to climb stairs and perform other activities. He is adapting to the new disability and will make a good pet for the right person, according to shelter officials.

All animals adopted from the animal shelter are spayed or neutered, have age appropriate vaccinations and are microchipped with registration. Cats are tested for the feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus, and dogs are tested for heart worms.
