A group of women in Tellico Village hopes the simple act of recycling can make a difference.

Stamps for Mission organizers are asking area residents to save old postage stamps to provide Sunday school literature to children in other countries by tearing off the corner of the envelope with at least a 1/2-inch border.

The mission project started at First Baptist Church in Tellico Village but now includes women from the Community Church at Tellico Village, FCE Club of Monroe County/Fork Creek and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs Coytee Club.

Stamps can be dropped at either FBC or the Community Church. The stamps are packaged and mailed to wholesalers who pay the postage and buy the stamps for distribution to collectors.

Money collected pays to produce Sunday school literature used by 40 denominations in nine Latin American countries.

Last year, $4,400 was raised from the sale of the stamps. Since its beginning the sale has generated $979,000.

Any business or organization that would like to be involved, or would like to have postage picked up, can contact FBC at 865-408-0110 or Audrey Larson, program coordinator, at 865-458-5857.
