Mary Rose Purdy Denney

Mary Rose Purdy Denney was born in 1936 and grew up in Litchfield, Mich., until she graduated from high school and married Jerry.

They traveled while he was in the military and then settled in Hillsdale, Mich., and raised their daughters, Kay, Crystal and Cindy in a country home they built. Mary taught fourth grade at Gier School in Hillsdale until her retirement in 1993. She attended Michigan State University, earning a BA and MA in education.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry, who died in 2015; and sister, Kay.

She is survived by daughters, Kay, Crystal and husband, Manny, and Cindy; grandchildren, Zach, Alex, Adam, Andrew and wife, Aimee, Rachel and John; six great-grandchildren; and sisters, Jan and husband, Gene, and Judi of Jacksonville, Fla.

Mary and Jerry traveled all the states and continents and tent camped when the girls were little. She became a member of the 900-mile club after hiking all the trails in the Smoky Mountains National Park. She also hiked some of the Appalachian Trail with Jerry. After moving to Tellico Village in 1995, she enjoyed lake activities and the beautiful home they built on the water. Mary became an avid supporter of The Public Library at Tellico Village and spent many hours volunteering there. She was a golfer, reader, duplicate bridge player and enjoyed other card games and stage performances.

Mary’s cremains will be placed in the columbarium of the Community Church at Tellico Village. Memorial gifts may be made to The Public Library at Tellico Village.
