Mary Alice Rasmussen, 87, of Tellico Village, passed away July 1, 2021.
Mary Gallagher was born April 7, 1934, in Kalamazoo, Mich., daughter of James “Hugh” and Ruth (Hall) Gallagher. She attended high school in Delton, Mich., and graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in home economics education and from Western Michigan University with a Master of Arts degree.
She taught in Grand Ledge and Plainwell, Mich., and supervised student teachers at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore. She returned to Michigan to teach in Milford where she met and married John Rasmussen, her husband of 51 years.
The couple lived in Highland, Mich., both working for Huron Valley Schools for more than 30 years before retiring and moving to Tellico Village in 1998.
Mary enjoyed cooking, sewing, traveling, playing games, attending family gatherings and school reunions. She was the hostess with the mostest, always making family and friends feel comfortable and welcome. She loved watching sports, especially her beloved Michigan State Spartans. Go Green!
She is survived by her husband, John Rasmussen; son, Jay (Kimberly) Rasmussen of Waterford, Mich.; grandson, Brady Rasmussen of Waterford, Mich.; three step-grandsons, Joey (Morgan) Traeye of Pontiac, Mich., Nick (Ashley) Traeye of Waterford, Mich., and Cooper Traeye of Waterford, Mich.; five great-grandchildren; three nieces, Kathleen (Stephen) Riikonen of Elkart Ind., Diane Gallagher of Elkart Ind., and Lorraine Gallagher of Eatonton, Ga.; and one nephew, Michael (Shellie) Gallagher of Fort Wayne, Ind.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; and brother and sister-in-law, James and Elaine Gallagher.
Family will receive friends 10-11 a.m. Friday, July 30, 2021, with mass to follow at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Lenoir City.
