Local census response among state’s best
With the deadline for the 2020 census approaching, local officials are encouraging residents to do their part to help Loudon County for years to come.
Data collection ends Sept. 30, June Iljana, census representative, said.
Loudon is one of five counties in Tennessee to surpass participation in the last census.
“I think it means that the greatest majority, overwhelming majority of folks here in Loudon County, recognized it and were responsible enough to take care of it,” Rollen “Buddy” Bradshaw, county mayor, said. “The big pocket was really Tellico Village. ... If Tellico Village had actually been incorporated they would have led the state in self-response.”
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Census Bureau temporarily stopped all field data collection efforts.
“In early August, census takers began following up in person with homes that have not yet responded,” Ijana said. “If a census taker comes to your home, please cooperate. Your community needs your response. ... Everyone living in Loudon County benefits from a complete and accurate count to ensure that the services they use — from roads and schools to emergency medical care — are adequately funded and that the community receives fair political representation.”
Iljana said most residents can fill out the census in 5-10 minutes, depending on the size of the household, online at www.2020census.gov, by phone at 844-330-2020, by returning a completed paper questionnaire or directly by speaking with a census taker when they visit.
“It’s very important that you include everyone living or staying in the home, regardless of the person’s age or relationship to the householder,” she said. “Anyone who does not live most of the time in another place where they will be counted should be counted in your home. Be sure to count infants and young children in the home, whether they are in your custody or not.”
Iljana stressed information was confidential and that under federal law responses can’t be shared with other government agencies or used against a person in any way.
