Brian Baldwin, 69, of Vonore, passed away unexpectedly at 1:16 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2019, at Blount Memorial Hospital.
He was born and raised his family in the Chicago area but fell in love with the beauty of Tennessee and made it his home in 2006 surrounded by good friends and neighbors. He held a degree from Lewis University and retired after more than 30 years of service to Illinois Bell and Ameritech. Selfless and hard working, he was also a master handyman and took pride in helping family, friends and neighbors with all projects big and small.
Brian was a tireless fisherman and avid golfer, enjoyed reading, crafting stained-glass windows, watching the Chicago Bears, Bulls and Sox, and always had the greenest lawn and fastest car on the block. Among his many accomplishments, he is the inventor under bell systems U.S. Patent #6,055,304. He served his community as a devoted member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, the Lions Club, Tellico Village Fishing Club and countless other community and civic groups.
Most of all, Brian loved his family, and will be dearly missed by his wife of 43 years, Mary (Stimatz); son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Ali (Gernaey) of Fort Worth, Texas; daughters and sons-in-law, Carey and Jeff Mathesius of Grimes, Iowa, and Katie and Lars Davis of Gainesville, Fla.; and, of course, as “Papa” to granddaughters, Becca and Jenna and grandson, Liam.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Joan (Powers); parents-in-law, Joseph and Eleanor (Gorski) Stimatz; and brothers-in-law, Michael Saviano and Donald McCombe.
He leaves behind dear brothers, Mark and Kurt of Watervliet, Mich.; and sisters, Karen and Coleen (Saviano) of Oak Lawn, Ill.; sisters and brothers-in-law, JoAnn McCombe, Barbara Stimatz and Joe Stimatz; aunt, Adelaide Powers; nephews and nieces; countless friends; and his dog, Annie.
Visitation was held 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in Madisonville with a funeral mass to follow with the Rev. Julius Abuh officiating. Interment will be held at a later date at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Alsip, Ill. In lieu of flowers, donations in Brian’s memory may be sent to St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, 649 Old Tellico Highway North, Madisonville, TN 37354.
